ELICOS Course:

ANU College offers a range of English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS).

ELICOS programs are accredited by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) and cater for a range of language levels from Elementary to Advanced.

Many of our teachers are specialists in Academic English, Study Skills, university preparatory courses, and IELTS preparation. Some are qualified IELTS examiners; many have overseas experience.

Students in our ELICOS program come from diverse backgrounds including Asia, Europe, Latin America and The Middle East.

NOTE: Students must be at least 16 years old before they begin their studies at ANU College eg for General English, English for Academic Purposes, ANU Access English Program and Foundation Studies.

ELICOS classes:

On the first day, students take a placement test to decide which of the following class levels they will enter:

Pre-Intermediate (General English) classes focus on general English skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Intermediate (General Academic English) classes focus on a combination of general and academic skills.

Upper-Intermediate and Advanced classes focus on a combination of general and academic skills according to the needs of the student.

IELTS preparation is included at Intermediate and Upper Intermediate levels.

Please note:

Students must enrol for a minimum 5 week module and must start in week 1.

The weekly timetable covers the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Students receive a Certificate of Attainment on completion of their course.

Entry Requirements:

Students must be able to begin study at the Pre-Intermediate level at least, as there are no classes for Beginners. Elementary students may be accepted under special arrangement negotiated prior to beginning their course.

Students need to plan to arrive in Australia at least 2-3 days before their course Orientation Day so that they have time to settle in before their program of study commences.

English Language Course Content

  • College hours are between 8.45am and 3:00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Classes are between 8:45am and 12:30pm on Wednesday.
  • A student’s weekly timetable may include the following classes:
  • Speaking, Reading, Writing, Listening and English for Specific Purposes (for example, Pronunciation, or preparation for IELTS).
  • At the end of the course students will receive a Certificate of Attainment outlining their level of English. Assessment methods used are class tests, completed homework and participation in class activities.

Day one of ELICOS

The first day of class is Orientation Day.

  • Students should arrive at ANU College at 8.45am.
  • At 9.00am the Orientation session commences.
    • Students take a Level Placement Test to determine their class.
    • Students are taken on a walking tour of the ANU campus to familiarise them with the various facilities.
    • In the afternoon students are taken on a sightseeing tour of Canberra by bus. There is no charge for the Canberra tour.
  • On day two, at 8.45am, students are given their timetables and begin their classes.
