Pathway to foundation


Pathway to Foundation (English for Academic Purposes)

CRICOS Course Code: English for Academic Purposes - 023311F

  • This 15-week Pathway program is designed primarily for students who intend to study in the Foundation Studies Program, but have not achieved a sufficient level of English. Completion of the Pathway course will allow a direct entry into ANU College’s Foundation Studies Program, and subsequently into undergraduate studies at The Australian National University.
  • Courses begin in February, June, and October each year; programs finish in time for students to commence the next Foundation Studies Program.
  • The Pathway course is also available to intermediate-level (around IELTS 5-5.5) students who are not planning to do the Foundation Studies Program, but who want English for Academic Purposes.

Entry Requirements:

Students intending to enrol in Foundation Studies Program:

  • must meet or exceed the academic requirements for Foundation Studies Program; AND have
  • an overall IELTS score of 5.0, with minimum Band of 4.5 in each of reading, writing, listening and speaking; or
  • a computer-based TOEFL score of 180, with a TWE of 3; or
  • a paper-based TOEFL score of 510 with a TWE of 3 ; or
  • an internet-based TOEFL score of 64 with a TWE of 18.

Students not intending to enrol in the Foundation Studies Program must meet the above English language requirements.

Course Content:

  • This course offers academic skills in language reading, writing, listening and speaking, together with study skills essential in a Western academic environment - for example, critical thinking, note-taking, giving presentations, conducting basic research, and seminar and tutorial participation.

Assessment:

  • Assessment tasks include assignments and exams, similar to the types of assessment tasks used in Foundation Studies Academic English subjects. Most major assessment tasks fall in weeks 11 to 15.
  • Students who achieve 60% or better in the Pathway to Foundation course can proceed to ANU College Foundation Studies Program without taking an IELTS or TOEFL test again.
  • Students who do not achieve 60%, but still wish to enrol in the Foundation Studies Program, have the option of taking an IELTS or TOEFL test to meet ANU College’s English language requirements for the Foundation Studies Program.

How to Apply:

Students planning on going into the Foundation Studies Program (on successful completion of the Pathway to Foundation program) should apply/enrol in both programs. Applications for entry into the Foundation Studies Program will be assessed at this time. In addition to sending three recent photographs of themselves and a certified copy of their English language proficiency qualifications, students should send a certified, translated copy of their school or academic qualifications (do not send original documents).

Students not planning to enrol in Foundation Studies Program should send three recent photographs of themselves and a certified copy of their English language proficiency qualifications (i.e. their IELTS or TOEFL scores.)
