ANU Access English Program

ANU Access English Program

The ANU Access English Program is a 10-week English and Academic Preparation course conducted by ANU College with the specific aim of enhancing academic and learning skills of students preparing for university studies. Successful completion of this program will enable students to fulfil the English Language requirement for admission to the ANU.

ANU Access English Program Fee & Costs

The ANU Access Program has a fee of A$4,450 for the 10-week program, plus the administration fee of A$165. There is a fee of A$89* for 13-weeks Overseas Student Health Cover. The Program fee does not include textbooks and living costs.

*Overseas Health Cover fees do vary per year.

Application

How do I apply for the ANU Access English Program?

Eligible students must complete and forward an ANU Access English application form to ANU College. Attach to your application a certified copy of current English Language Test results and a copy of the Conditional Offer to the ANU.

Eligibility

If you have been granted a conditional offer (conditional on meeting the English Language Requirement equivalent to IELTS 6.5) to either an ANU undergraduate or postgraduate program AND if you also meet one of the following English requirements, you are eligible to apply for the ANU Access Program.

Minimum English requirements for ANU Access English Program:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 5 Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – computer based test score of 210 with TWE of 4.0 Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – paper based test score of 550 with TWE of 4.0. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Internet based test score of 78.

Successful completion of the ANU Access Program with a score of over 60% will satisfy the English Language Requirement for admission to the ANU undergraduate and postgraduate programs which require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. There is no need for students who successfully complete the ANU Access Program to take the IELTS test again before admission to University. The ANU Access Program is not available for students planning to study Law at the ANU as the English Language Requirement for Law courses is the equivalent of IELTS 7.

Students who do not attain 60% in the ANU Access Program will be able to take the IELTS test in order to meet the University English Language Requirement for admission.

Course Outline and Description

The Access English course is both content-based and skills-based. Topics that are relevant to academic discussion are included, as well as the skills necessary for fulfilling academic tasks. Emphasis is placed on the development of analytical and critical thinking, which are vital for success in tertiary studies. The course will comprise five major strands: Academic Listening, Academic Speaking, Academic Reading, Academic Writing and Study Skills.

A textbook is required for this course to revise the structures of English and to expand the general vocabulary of students. Additional course materials will include newspaper, journal, and magazine articles to inform students about Australian and international issues and to provide useful background for the students' future studies.

Course Assessment

The assessment of the course is task-based with tasks similar to those undertaken at tertiary level. These will include oral presentations, essays, reports and a final examination at the end of the program. Class hours will be from 9am to 3.30pm each weekday of the program.
