Maths Bridging Course

How To Apply:

Please complete the Mathematics Bridging Application Form and return it with your payment to ANU College. Places in each course are limited and will be filled strictly in order of receipt of application.

Course Fees (2008)

The fee for each module is AUD$210.00. The fee must be paid before the course commences.

Prescribed Text

Jones and Couchman; Three Unit Mathematics Books 1 & 2. Textbooks are available from the ANU CO-OP Bookstore.

 

 

Maths Bridging Course in Conjunction with the Department of Mathematics at The Australian National University

Mathematics Bridging Course is designed for domestic students and seeks to extend theirall-round mathematical skills. This program is particularly suitable for students planning to enrol in undergraduate programs at The Australian National University (ANU) and other tertiary institutions, or individuals who need extended mathematical skills to assist them in their jobs.

Intending students should discuss with the ANU Course Adviser which course of study is appropriate and whether any supplementary information is required. Courses will only be conducted if sufficient numbers enrol.

ANU Admissions

Those intending to apply for an undergraduate degree course at The Australian National University on the basis of Bridging Mathematics and a Multiple Choice Test should contact the Admissions Officer of The Australian National University on (02) 6125 5594, as soon as they have enrolled and been accepted by ANU College.

Please Note:

If you are intending to use your results to enter an undergraduate degree course at the ANU through the UPS Scheme, you must be 21 years of age or over, on 1 March 2008.

Notice of cancellation must be provided in writing at least five working days before the course begins. A refund of the course fee, less an administration fee of $50 will be made. No refunds can be made after this date.

Two 2.5-hour sessions each week for 3 weeks per module.

The emphasis is on algebra:

· algebraic operations
· quadratic equations
· co-ordinate geometry of straight lines
· functions, domain, range
· index laws, indicial equations
· polynomials
· remainder and factor theorems

The emphasis is on calculus:

· rate of change
. the derivative
· maximum and minimum
· inequalities involving absolute values
· polynomial inequalities
· product, quotient & chain rules
· derivative of exp and log functions
· the antiderivative
· the fundamental theorem of calculus
· techniques of integration

The emphasis is on trigonometry:

· the trigonometric ratios
· trig ratios of angles of any magnitude
· the pythagorean identities
· sine rule, cosine rule, area
· circular function and the radian
· graphs of trig functions
· addition formulas, double angle formulas
· trigonometric equations
· the derivatives of trig functions
· derivatives of combined trig, exp, log functions
· integration of trig functions
· integration of sin x, cos x
· integration by pattern
· integration by substitution
