Accommodation and Living Expenses

Finding a place to live

Finding a place to live is often a concern for international students and their families. Our Accommodation Officer at ANU College can help you find suitable Homestay accommodation in Canberra.

Please contact: homestay@anucollege.com.au  for further assistance. The office hours are Monday-Friday from 8.30am to 5.00pm. ANU College administration is not open on weekends.

Students are only able to live in ANU on-campus residences once they begin their undergraduate course at the ANU.

For further information on ANU residential accommodation, please go to http://accom.anu.edu.au/

Students under the age of 18 must be placed with a homestay family, unless the student will be living with a family member who is over the age of 21.

Accommodation Options

Homestay Accommodation

Homestay accommodation gives the student the opportunity to live with an Australian family. The family provides the student with three (3) meals per day and their own bedroom with furniture.

ANU College manages an extensive and highly successful Homestay accommodation program that sees over 300 students each year, happily settle into their new life in Canberra.

Guardianship & Accommodation

Students under the age of 18 commencing study at ANU College must have a legal guardian living in Canberra.

The guardian may be a relative who is over 21.

If you do not have a guardian

If you do not have a family member who is over 21 years of age and living in Canberra, then ANU College will arrange homestay accommodation for you. The homestay host will act as your guardian. In this situation you pay the standard homestay rate of A$240 per week plus a A$20.00 per week guardianship fee. The total fee of A$260 per week must be paid to the guardian in advance each fortnight (with A$960 payable on arrival).

Living Expenses

When you arrive you will need extra money to cover your initial establishment costs. You should bring at least A$200 in cash, and A$900 in traveller's cheques for these initial costs. Credit card and Automatic Teller facilities are widely available in the city and on the University campus, and many shops have electronic funds transfer facilities, which accept debit and Credit cards. Obtaining money with bank drafts or bank cheques is slow as the the banks may take 10 working days to clear drafts and cheques.

Living expenses for a single student are approximately $260 per week.

These figures do not include:

  • Buying expensive items such as a television, video or computer.
  • Owning and maintaining a car.
  • Living expenses during long vacation.
